“The Empowered You: Houston Senior Citizens Conference,” is like “Seniors 101,” as it provided a one-stop shop for tools to help senior citizens thrive in this season of their lives. The conference featured workshop sessions on topics such as Hurricane Harvey recovery, estate planning, cooking and nutrition, healthcare, life after retirement, senior housing and care, and senior transportation options.
The event began with a community resource fair to connect seniors and caregivers to local organizations that provide services and resources to senior citizens; such as Rebuilding Together Houston and Texas Senior Medicare Patrol. Following the community resource fair, Council Member Edwards convened the Opening Session, which featured remarks from speakers Rawle Andrews, Regional Vice President of AARP, and DeEtte Sauer, championship swimmer and 2017 National Senior Games gold medalist. Council Member Edwards and the guest speakers was also available for interviews immediately following the Opening Session.
Participants also enjoyed line dancing, aerobics, and cooking classes. The BBQ lunch featured live entertainment by the band, Bourbon Street. The conference equipped seniors and their loved ones with tools to be informed and empowered at a critical time of their lives.
