O’Neta Cavitt

O’Neta Cavitt comes from a large family of educators and lawyers. Cavitt is the daughter from a prominent well known family in Kendleton, Texas known as the Pink Family. Her parents are Robert and Cora Tarver Pink.

O’Neta is the second oldest out of six children. She and with her siblings attended Powell Point High School from which she graduated in 1933. She then received a Bachelor of Science certificate from Paul Quinn College and a Library Science Certificate from Prairie View A&M University.
She also received her advanced Library Science at Sam Houston State University and she is a graduate of the Fashion Academy in Chicago, Illinois as a designer of fine hats. After completing all of the requirements in cosmetology and receiving her certificate as a cosmetologist, she entered Houston College for Negroes, now known as Texas Southern University (TSU). During this time she opened a hat shop at 222 West Dallas in Houston, Texas. There, she sold the hats she made as well as different kinds of accessories.


Her clientele consisted of Black and White women who loved her hats. However she closed her business when she started to work in the Aldine Independent School District (AISD). “I didn’t want to relocate my business so I decided to close my business,” stated Onetta. Her first job in AISD was at Carver High School - during the period of integration.  There she was employed as the first certified head librarian at the school. At Carver, she taught ninth and eleventh grade students. She also taught at Aldine Senior High School. In all she taught in the district for 15 years.


“I decided I wanted a change so I went to Houston Independent School District to work at Robert E. Lee Elementary and Browning Elementary,” she continued. Being a graduate from Franklin Beauty School, she taught Millinery (the study of hat making) to adults for 10 years during an evening class. In 1984, she retired with 29 years working as an educator.   She is the president of the Pilgrim Building Alumni, a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the National Association of University Women. She was also chairwoman of the World Mutual Service Committee which under her administration grew in membership from eight to 75. She has also served as president of the Powell Point Alumni Association and is a life member of the HHC Teacher’s Association, a member of the HHC Chorus and a member of many more organizations.


In 1937, she met Roscoe Alvin Cavitt, a tax consultant. After only two months of courting they married and have been together for 55 years. During this union they produced one child, Cheryle A. Cavitt who is a graduate of University of Houston and of Prairie View A&M University. Cheryl A.Cavitt is currently the assistant principal at A.B. Anderson Academy. Oneta Cavitt is a woman of many talents and many accomplishments.
