Prairie View A&M University hosts 4-H volunteer recruitment drive

As part of the commemoration of national 4-H Week and the 100th birthday celebration of 4-H in America, the Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Harris County 4-H staff was in Sharpstown and Northline malls in Houston to recruit volunteers and inform people about the organization.

“We want people to know about 4-H and the services that it offers to young people,” said LaVaughn Mosley, Extension Agency 4-H, Cooperative Extension Program (CEP) at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), Harris County. They had exhibits set up in each mall that will highlight our 4-H program, and information about 4-H and promotional items to distribute to those persons who visited our displays. “Our main objective is to find people who want to volunteer to work with 4-Hers, lead a general 4-H club, or help organize 4-H events and activities.” The exhibits were on display at both malls Sharpstown and Northline Mall.

“Founded in 1902, 4-H is now the largest youth organization in America. Nationwide, 4-H has 9 million members, including 880,000 in Texas. The Cooperative Extension Program of Prairie View A&M University has had a traditional 4-H program since 1985; however, the program has always offered youth programs and activities to primarily limited resource youth located in 43 Texas counties since 1972.”
“Our theme to kick off the 4-H celebration in Houston is Harris County 4-H Celebrating the Power of Youth,” said Mosley. We work with young people to help them build self-esteem, engage in various 4-H projects such as leadership, food and nutrition and entrepreneurship and develop citizenship skills. We consider our youth as our most precious commodity.”
