LostInSpace—It’s little doubt that Cornell Curtis Smith’s love ones figured that the March 16, 2002 celebration of his life at Mount Ararat BC, 5801 W. Montgomery was forever Lost In Space, however, African-American News &Issues promise (to publish every funeral program we receive) stands firm. Rev. Homer Lewis and Leonard Williams honored Smith with a duet and Thomas Dickerson and Rev. Felix Miles rendered solos. Rev. Ameal Jones eulogized Smith who served as a Trustee and member of his Finance Committee for 30 years, as a good and faithful servant for the Lord. Cornell, born in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 3, 1923 was the first son of Miles and Willie Loraine Smith. A rock solid Smith, served in the Navy during World War II and worked as a machinist for Armco Steel for 38 years and then took over as the Custodial Manager at his church. Deacons and Trustees were Smith’s Honorary Pallbearers. Fred Smith, Michal Dickerson, Gary Tolden, Rev. Leonard Williams Jr., Paul Mills, Michael Love, Fitzroy Pierre and Rev. Felix Miles were active pallbearers. He leaves to mourn, his loving and devoted wife for 29 years, Dennis Marie Smith; a brother, Rev. Felix Miles; five daughters: Doretha Yvette, Debra Elaine, Rubystine, Sheila and Venitta. Also cherishing Smith’s memories are four grandsons: Donovan Greer, Ruben Joseph, Michael Joseph and Christopher Pierre, one great grandson: Khristopher Green; one granddaughter, Felicia Joseph and a host of other relatives and a very special friend Joe Thomas. Well-done Cornell Curtis Smith.

GoodNeighbor—Antioch MBC, 5902 Beall@Mansfield, bid farewell to their Good Neighbor “Mother” Natha Lee Smith, aka “Nookie,” when they celebrated her beautiful life on July 27, 2002 with Rev. F.N. Williams officiating. Reverends: Fred Ashton, Eric Williams and Fred Sanders offered prayer and song. Sis. Hope Eldridge rendered a solo. Rev. Chris Wright eulogized Mother Smith. Willie Atkinson, Eugene Green, Jr., Seabrook Lawson, Kenneth, Claude and Danny Hall were pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Clarence Scott, Ben Cooper, Frank Green, James Green, Rufus Singleton and Ricky Hall. Natha Lee was born on Feb. 18, 1948 in Houston, Texas to Otto & Minnie Lee Chaney. Nookie leaves to cherish her memories, her loving husband Charles; four daughters: Sheila (Pierre); Enita (Rodney); Sabrina (Tyrone); Angie (Charles), a step son, Charles; five sisters: Billie Jean, Delores, Thelma, Minnie and Maxien; 13 grandchildren and host of relatives and friends.

M’StonesInDaHood-- Happy belated birthday to Audrey Elmore, the legendary educator who is now one of Houston’s most successful realtors…. Happy birthday (Sept. 7) to Felicia Campbell, who first appear in AAN&I on her 17th birthday. Felicia has blossomed into a beautiful and talented 21-year-old junior at PVAMU, thanks to her doting mother, Carol Norris, who has done an outstanding job raising her. Linda Robinson, Juanita Franklin and Regina Burke, made sure that their mother, Shirlene McMillian would not forget her 70th birthday (August 29th), when they gave her an unforgettable party at the Victual Restaurant, 3814 Lyons @ Pannell, on August 25, 2002. Her two sons, Alonzo Rugeley and Plassee Woods, also feted Shirelene, who takes care of her 94-year-old father at Pleasant Hill Village. Erma Whitmire Harvey, came in from Killeen, Texas (where her career soldier husband retired), to celebrate with her big sister, Shirlene, the oldest of eight sisters and two brothers. Congrats Shirlene. May you have many more.
Carla Dyan Carter was selected as the 2002-2003 Ms. Black World Houston. Produced by Prince W. Rolle School of Music, She was crowned during the June 22, 2002 Pageant which was held in the Hannah Hall Auditorium on the Texas Southern University Campus.

Anthony Hall, Jr., receives “Heart of Houston Award”
Houston City Attorney Anthony W. Hall, Jr., is the recipient of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program’s “Heart of Houston” award for 2002. The award was presented during an inspiring program recently at the Junior League. This award is presented to an individual who best exemplifies good citizenship, professionalism and outstanding community service. City Attorney Hall has been a consistent supporter of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program since its inception and is an active participant in its Job Shadow initiative. Ernie McMillian is the Executive Director and Barry Barnes serves as chair of the board.

National Night Out RWECC
The Riverwood Estate Civic Club, held it’s regular monthly meeting, on August 15, at the Barbara Jordan Community Center, 6500 Winfield Road, in Houston, Texas. The meeting was called to order by President Willie Hunter who gave personal thanks to members for their participation in National Night Out.
