Principals Partnering with Ministers for Student Success By
Davetta Mills Daniels Principals of the Houston Independent School Districts,
South Central Location, hosted its Annual Ministers Breakfast at the SHAPE Community
Center.
Blazing New Trails With Ministers as Mentors seemed appropriate as educational
leaders across the country constantly seek better ways to serve children. The
problems of the 21st century are different from the problems we faced. The biggest
problems we faced then was making sure students got to class on time. Now we are faced
with the fact of whether or not they will come at all, stated Dr. Michael Williams.
School shootings, dropouts, and violence of that nature were unheard of in our
day.
The times have changed. The trends are different. As educational leaders, it is necessary
to create these type of innovations. The coalition concept of principals partnering with
pastors provides an excellent venue to effect change and create viable programs that will
maximize the talent and resources in our community. Ultimately, this effort will have a
positive impact on the children.
The South Central District Superintendent, Linda Whitley, presented a powerful,
Power-point presentation highlighting the accomplishments and programs of her district.
We have the best schools right here in the Third Ward area. Over half of the schools
in this area are performing exemplary/recognized by the Texas Education Accountability,
(TEA), ratings for TAAS.
Schools located in the South Central District are: Yates and Jones High, Cullen, Ryan and
Hartman Middle and Alcott, Blackshear, Brookline, Cornelius, Douglass, Dodson, Foster,
Garden Villas, Golfcrest, Gregg, Hartsfield, Kelso, Peck, Lockhart, MacArthur, Thompson,
Turner, TSU Lab, Whidby and the newly built Seguin Elementary.
DeLloyd Parker, founder and director of the SHAPE Community Center, was a gracious host as
he mentored the group on eating healthy. The Centers RAW NERVE Vegetarian
restaurant, prepared an array of nutritious (food for the soul) breakfast consisting of
veggie bacon sausage, turkey bacon and all of Natures Best.
SHAPE Center has provided keen leadership and direction in AfroCentric History,
education, culture and training in youth development for the past 20 years, stated
event organizer, Carolyn Scantlebury as she attributes her own sons success to
DeLloyd Parker and the Shape experience. This center is an icon in the Third Ward
community.
