Bethel Baptist Church undergoes fund-raising project for restoration

Preserving the heritage of Fourth Ward and Freedman’s Town Community for future generations is imperative. Throughout history, the Black church has been the center of African-American life.
As a strong cultural institution, it still provides various vital services to the community. Even though Bethel Baptist Church’s congregation has diminished, it continues the work of the Lord and its heritage.

The congregation, however, must now commit to major renovations of its church structure for the building to survive and give testimony to their recognition of the value of cultural history. Estimates from reputable engineers, architects and contractors total approximately $500,000 for preservation efforts of this historical church site. Historic preservation of this church will create an important tourist attraction.

The Preservation Committee is convinced that funds for restoration of Bethel can be raised within the Houston community. Persons wishing to donate contributions should send them to P.O. Box 131365 Houston, TX 77219. Make check payable to Bethel Baptist Church Restoration & Preservation Project. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Bethel is a 501 © (3) tax deductible organization.  Mrs. Gloria R. Melton, chair Robert O. Robertson, pastor.
