A public
hearing will be held at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, on June
27, 2002 regarding the proposed establishment of a Prairie View A&M University
Medical School. The hearing will take place in the Auditorium of the New Science
Building, from 1:30p.m. to 4:00p.m. (As required, by law, the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board will be the official sponsor of the hearing.)
Prior to the 77th Legislative Session, Prairie View A&M University did not offer a
doctor of medicine degree program. House Bill 42, sponsored by Representative Ruth Jones
McClendon, was passed into law, during the 77th Legislative Session, and amends the Texas
Education Code to authorize the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), with
the assistance of the Board of Regents (BOR), of the Texas A&M University System, to
conduct a feasibility study regarding an affiliation or coordination agreement between the
BOR and any institution of higher education to provide the clinical education necessary to
support a doctor of medicine degree program at Prairie View A&M University.
House Bill 42 provides that the THECB must complete the feasibility study on or before
December 31, 2002.
