San Marcos NAACP denounces racist city council campaign tactics

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS -- The Texas Hill Country Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Christian Fellowship Ministerial Union (CFU) held a press conference at San Marcos City Hall to address the racial and voter intimidation in the upcoming San Marcos City Council runoff election.

“Enough is enough” says Kyev P. Tatum, president of the NAACP and CFU. “We are tired of racism by intimidation and we denounce this kind of dangerous foolish politics,” Tatum said. Local Black leaders have asked each candidate to denounce this kind of politics, Tatum said. “We thought these days were behind [racial and political intimidation] us. The NAACP is committed to eradicating racism out of the fabric of our community and we will not allow our political leaders to harbor these dangerous feelings that divide our city along racial lines,” Tatum said.

The press conference was called to denounce a one-page campaign piece paid for by ‘San Marcos Citizens For Traditional Values.’ The piece is aimed at Asian mayor David Chew but targets its venom at other council members. A portion of the flyer reads as follows: “Take a Chew out of City Hall. On Saturday, June 1, we have the opportunity to take back our city government. Our present Mayor claims to be a conservative but in this year’s Republican primary, he openly supported state senator Jeff Wentworth, one of the leading proponents of abortionists and radical homosexual agenda in Texas. He claims to be a refugee from communist China but his governing style is straight out of that oppressive regime. He promises ‘proven Leadership’ but delivers ‘proven Dictatorship.’

“His sidekicks in this election are a Hispanic male and a Hispanic female. We already have Hispanic male, a Black female and unmarried White male on the city council. Isn’t it time for a council that reflects traditional Texas family values?” The piece goes on to endorse other candidates. The Black female refers to City Councilwoman Martha Castex Tatum, wife of Kyev Tatum. Tatum is not up for re-election this year.
The NAACP is reviewing its options and a request to the Justice Department is currently under consideration, Tatum said. “There appears to be a pattern here,” said Rev. Herman Foster, referring to the personal attacks on minority candidates. “This is disturbing and we really need someone from the outside to look into these racist political antics. This is 2002,” Foster states.
