| Juneteenth Texas Alliance presents Celebration 2002 |
| AUSTIN - Central Texas will have an additional
venue to celebrate Juneteenth with a festival Saturday, June 15, at Nelson Field, 7400
Berkman Drive, near Reagan High School and Hwy 290. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. From its Galveston origins in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African-American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States. State Farm Insurance Companies, H-E-B, the Austin Area Urban League and the Austin Area Heritage Council have formed the Juneteenth Texas Alliance (JTA) to produce the multicultural Juneteenth Celebration. With the support of private and public organizations, the JTA will present a community-wide event that celebrates and preserves the African-American experience through traditions associated with early June 19 celebrations in Texas. The JTA vision is for a family celebration to support existing community activities that honor Emancipation Day, including the Juneteenth parade and activities at Rosewood Park on June19. The Juneteenth Texas Celebration 2002 will feature a walk for health, childrens activities, live music, a BBQ cook-off with celebrity judges and heritage displays. All proceeds from the event will benefit Austin area youth who receive annual scholarships from the Austin Area Urban League and Austin Area Heritage Council. In this our first year, we have a number of great activities lined up that will draw a large crowd to Nelson Field, said Herman Lessard, JTA Partner& President/CEO of Austin Area Urban League. In years to come, our goal is to build this event to include city-wide Juneteenth activities and celebrations. Call 512/478-7176 for more information. |
