Houston Elks hosts the Texas State Association’s 78th Convention
The Texas State Association of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World will hold the 78th State Convention at the Hilton Southwest Hotel June 6 - 9, 2002.

The Houston Elks, Gibraltor Lodge #500, El Tex Temple #636, and Viola London Temple #1372 will host this event.

Approximately 250 Elks from across Texas will be attending as well as Bro. O.D. Evans, State President and Daughter Earnestine Landor, Daughter State President, both from Dallas. Our National Presidents, Dr. Donald P. Wilson and Dr. Jean C. W. Smith will also be here.

The Convention highlights will be the Oratorical Contest and the Beauty and Talent Pageant with contestants representing the Texas Lodges. The winners will advance to the finals, which is a national competition. The National winners are awarded scholarships.

The Texas State Oratorical Contest will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. and the Beauty and Talent Pageant will be held on Friday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m. All programs will be at the Hilton Southwest Hotel.

The Youth Councils from the Lodges will participate in the Convention. They will present their program on Saturday afternoon, June 8. The presentation will be done in African attire and will be an exciting performance.

The Elks are a non-profit organization that supports family values and charity and justice for all. Through varied programs they seek to incorporate youth into their programs and instill values that will remain with them through adulthood.

Gibraltor Lodge Exalted Ruler Royce Bailey, El Tex Daughter Ruler Yvette Pierce, and Viola London Daughter Ruler Ann Moore are currently leading a membership drive to enlist new members who are seeking a venue through which to develop and share their talents to make this world a better place.
