5th National Summit on Fatherhood in San Antonio
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Sanchez launched his plan for improving education in Texas last week. Sanchez called for raising teacher pay, providing a flexible testing system and expanding the safety net for public school children.   "Education is the most powerful way to enhance human and intellectual capital," said Sanchez. "If we get education right, everything else will follow. Get it wrong, and not much else will matter," he said.

Sanchez unveiled his proposals at a Head Start program in Dallas, to bolster his commitment to early education. Sanchez said as governor,he hopes to move the state toward universal pre-kindergarten for those who need it.
Other elements of his program call for: Expansion of health insurance options for low-income children; Development of partnerships with institutions of higher learning who can use their resources to create opportunities for students and teachers, such as laboratory schools; A recommitment to smaller class sizes; Greater efforts to reduce the dropout rate and to intervene earlier with potential dropouts

The plan is the result of listening to educators, parents, school board members, superintendents, taxpayers and politicians, Sanchez said.
"They have helped me to better understand what is happening in the classroom and how statewide policies can impact students, teachers and school districts at the local level."
