Deputy Secretary recognized for leadership
WASHINGTON - Housing and Urban Development
Deputy Secretary Alphonso Jackson was inducted into the Texas chapter of the National
Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Hall of Fame. This honor is
extended annually to leaders who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and
leadership in promoting affordable housing and community development.
"I am extremely humbled by this honor, but I know there is so much more to do,"
said Jackson. 'President Bush, Secretary Martinez and I are committed to improving housing
conditions, increasing home ownership and protecting the vulnerable. The tireless efforts
that NAHRO supports are exactly the type of leadership with which I am proud to be
associated."
Jackson has a wide range of experience in housing, finance, and management. He is a noted
authority in public housing and community development. Jackson, most recently the
President of American Electric Power-TEXAS located in Austin, was sworn-in as the Deputy
Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on June 6, 2001.
From January 1989 until July 1996, he was president and CEO of The Housing Authority of
the City of Dallas, Texas, where he formulated and implemented housing policy for the $95
million operation. Previous to The Housing Authority of the City of Dallas, he was
director of the Department of Public and Assisted Housing in Washington, D.C., for the
$137 million operation. Also, he served as Chairperson for the District of Columbia
Redevelopment Land Agency Board. Jackson holds a bachelor's degree in political science
and a master's degree in education administration from Truman State University and a law
degree from Washington University School of Law.
In 1977, he became the director of Public Safety for the City of St. Louis. He also served
as executive director for the St. Louis Housing Authority; a director of consultant
services for the certified public accounting firm of Laventhol and Horwath-St. Louis; and
special assistant to the chancellor and assistant professor at the University of Missouri.
Jackson is currently serving on the Board of Regents, Texas Southern University. He
previously served on the following Boards: JP Morgan Chase & Co.-Texas; Zale-Lipshy
University Hospital; The Nature Conservancy of Texas; Voyager Expanded Learning, Inc.; The
Hockaday School; the Board of Regents, Truman State University; Dallas Citizens Council;
Dallas Theater Center; Episcopal School of Dallas; Boy Scouts of America, Dallas
Metropolitan and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Jackson was presented the National Boys & Girls Clubs of America 1997 Chairman's Award
and was a 1995 Fellow - The Aspen Institute. Presidential and other Appointments: The
National Commission on America's Urban Families (92-93); Member of the Regional Selection
Panel for the White House Fellowship Programs (90-92) and a Member of The National
Commission on Severely Distressed Public Housing (90-92). In addition, Deputy Secretary
Jackson was a member of the National Welfare Simplification and Coordination Advisory
Committee (92-93) and served as Chairman of the General Services Commission of the State
of Texas (95-98).
The Texas chapter of the NAHRO is an organization comprised of affordable housing and
community development professionals whose focus is to enhance affordable housing and
community development opportunities in the state of Texas.
