The Mount Pleasant Baptist
Church, 4819 Hershe at Solo, where Rev. Roy L. Jackson serves as pastor, hosted its second
Reginald Keith Guillory Scholarship Academic Achievement Awards Luncheon, honoring
students in Houston for their academic accomplishments in school and awarding scholarships
to qualified recipients. This gala affair was chaired and co-chaired by Mrs. Betty Brewer
and Mrs. Helen Handy Hayes, respectively.
Brady's Landing Restaurant was the setting for these festivities and Mount Pleasant gave
each honoree an academic trophy and a medallion, along with congratulatory certificates of
recognition and acknowledgements from national, congressional, state and local public
officials. The honorees also received bags containing items for school.
Many parents, friends and well-wishers were in attendance to congratulate the honorees and
scholarship recipients and celebrate with them. Mr. George Smith, KHOU-TV Channel 11,
anchor, served as Master of Ceremony. Rev. Terry Land, associate minister of MPBC,
challenged the distinguished honorees and scholarship recipients with "Words of
Inspiration and Encouragement".
Honorees are: Makeshia Lynette Hayes, Brooklyn Brewer, Christopher Martin, Cama'la Giles,
Jeffrey Mitchell, Leslie Brewer and Adrian Darnell Mouton. Elward Guillory, Sr., finance
chairman, Mary Guillory, decoration/luncheon chairman, Shirley Baines, guest soloist,
Betty Brewer, scholarship chairman, George Smith, master of ceremonies, Cassandra
Humphrey, $1,000.00 scholarship recipient, Roy LeDoyal Jackson, $1,000.00 scholarship
recipient, Alyzabeth Malone, $1,000.00 scholarship recipient, Helen Handy Hayes, co-chair
of Scholarship Committee and chairman of Souvenir Journal, Reva Land, committee member,
and Rev. Terry Land, associate minister, MPBC.
Other committee members are Novella Robinson, hostess chairman, Albertha Adams, ticket
chairman, Floyd Calhoun and Maud Adair Robinson.
