United
Ladies of Houston host 33rd National Dinner Day Banquet
Many Christians from Houston and the Metropolitan area
flocked into the South Union Church of Christ's Family Life Center on March 8 to celebrate
the United Ladies of Houston's Thirty-Third National Dinner Day Banquet. It was a grand
affair as was evident when all came wearing long and short formal wear.
Lois Thompson Holland, coordinator for the Ladies, who raise funds to benefit Southwestern
Christian College in Terrell, Texas, was overjoyed about the success of the banquet.
Rosetta Chandler and Gloria Turner, chairpersons of the Silent Auction did a marvelous job
getting the audience to bid on the prizes, which were donated by various churches and
businesses. Marilyn Duncan reported that a total of $12,000.00 was raised for Southwestern
Christian College.
The Dinner Day Chairpersons, Mary Harris, Almeta Crawford, Judy Scranton and Geneva Mock
planned an elaborate banquet. Bro. James Roberson, minister of the South Union Church of
Christ, had a grand welcome for everyone and Brother Edgar Scott, keynote speaker,
challenged all present to donate more funds to keep Southwestern College alive.
Bro. Paul Jones, minister of North Wayside Church of Christ, was the Toastmaster and did a
great job. There was a delicious and scrumptious meal served by John and Mandura Ellis
owners of Ellis Enterprise. Many left the banquet humming "mmm-mmm-good," as
they really did eat heartily.
After the dinner, Brenda Dogan, Carolyn Taylor, commentator, Elzina Davis, Doris Polk and
Novella Washington conducted an elaborate fashion show with the theme: "Strolling
Down The Runway at the Union."
It was appropriate indeed, as Ruth Bason, Dogan and other models thrilled the audience
with their moves and great fashions, which ranged from church wear, causal and evening
glamour. The ministers and their wives in Houston and surrounding metropolitan took to the
runway to model their ensembles. Everyone departed the facility with smiles on their faces
