Huston-Tillotson College's 2002
Commencement Convocation
Pageantry and splendor combined with delight and relief for the members of the graduating
class describe Huston-Tillotson College's 2002 Commencement Convocation that will be held
on Sunday, May 5, at 10 a.m. on the campus at 900 Chicon Street. Several events
leading up to Commencement include Honors Convocation, May 4, at 10 a.m. in King-Seabrook,
and Reunion Weekend 2002 activities, scheduled at various times and locations around the
city.
United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison will deliver the keynote Commencement address,
and Rev. Kenneth A. Allen, Pastor, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, San Antonio, will deliver the
Honors Convocation address.
Alumni from the "Class of 1952," representing the 50-year class, and the last
classes of Samuel Huston and Tillotson colleges before the merger, will march with 2002
graduates in the Commencement processional.
The roots of Tillotson College date back to 1875 and build upon work of the Freedmen's Aid
Society of the American Missionary Association of the Congregational churches (now United
Church of Christ). Founded as a "normal school" for the training of teachers for
the African American community, Tillotson College was renowned for the excellence of its
Department of Education and its Music Department, which was established in 1885.
The roots of Samuel Huston College date back to 1876 and the United Methodist Church when
the Reverend George Warren Richardson, a Methodist minister from Minnesota, established a
school for African American youth. This year marks the 50-year anniversary of what is now
known as Huston-Tillotson College.
Senator Hutchison became the first woman to represent her state in the U.S. Senate with
her election in 1993. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives after
serving as the Texas State Treasurer. The Senator lives in Dallas with her husband, Ray,
an attorney, and their daughter, Bailey, and son, Houston.
Families and friends planning to attend Commencement should enter the campus off Chalmer
or Comal Streets and park in the appropriate lots.
4th Annual Roosevelt Leaks
Celebrity Golf Tournament
The Austin Eastside Story Foundation invites the public to join in the festivities of the
4th Annual Roosevelt Leaks Celebrity Golf Tournament on Friday, June 21 at Circle C Golf
Club.
The Austin Eastside Story Foundation is a 501© 3 agency, providing community access to
emerging technologies and enhanced educational opportunities for children and their
families living, working and attending school in East and Northeast Austin and
Pflugerville. The Eastside Story Afterschool Program assists more than 800 students from
public,charter and private schools in East and Northeast Austin and Pflugerville by
providing assistance with daily homework assignments, TAAS tutorial services and computer
technology training for students ages 5 through 13 years.
The tournament benefits the foundation's Science, Math and Technology Summer Camp, an
eight-week intensive camp which operates from early June through late July.
A true pioneer, Roosevelt Leaks is a graduate of UT/Austin and former Longhorn and
National Football League player. He is a parent of a student in the program and actively
supports the work of the foundation with time and talent.

Mayor Lee P. Brown comes to Third Ward for a community meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2002
from 6 - 9p.m. at the S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, 3815 Live Oak. Presented by the Fair

Free Computer Training
Houston Community College-Southeast Campus, is offering qualified individuals free
computer training, the result of a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. The
14-week-long class is set to begin May, 8, 2002 and is being conducted Monday through

Third Ward Community Cloth Cooperative Meeting will hold its monthly meeting of
organizations on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at the South Central YMCA, 3531 Wheeler Ave. from

Third Annual Multicultural Fair
Eisenhower Sr. High School's Third Annual Multicultural Fair will be held Saturday, May
11, 2002 from 12 - 5p.m. Adults and children will have the opportunity to watch and
participate in various multinational events such as live musical and dance performances,
games, contests, hands-on activities, and art ad craft fair, a fashion show and
